DIY Landscaping or Hire a Professional Landscape Contractor?

With a multitude of TV shows, websites, books and magazines telling us how “easy” DIY home and landscaping projects can be, it’s not a crazy to think that hiring a professional landscape contractor isn’t necessary. The truth is that landscaping projects can be very difficult, especially for the beginner. Woody’s Custom Landscaping, Inc. takes pride in spending time with our customers to make sure they have the right materials, personnel and equipment for their job. We want to make sure you’re thrilled with the end results. For difficult or complex projects, that means hiring landscape professionals and hopefully we are your choice. Here is our easy to use contact us form as a link.

Here’s what PLANET, the Professional Landcare Network, has to say about it:
“Hiring a professional landscape contractor is key to the successful completion of complicated projects.”

“Start by asking friends, neighbors and family for referrals and check local landscape and nursery associations for members. When interviewing landscape architects, landscape designers or landscape contractors, make sure you understand what services each provides, including what will be subcontracted out. Some companies may do design and project oversight, but bring in subcontractors for specific jobs, such as the installation of lighting or water features, major concrete demolition or construction. Here are some things to think about:”

“What do you want out of your landscaping? A respite from hectic days? A place where the kids can play? An expanse of green lawn or islands of trees, shrubs and flowering plants for year round color? A place for entertaining?” This is important for the landscape contractor, landscape architect or designer.

“Do you need any structures or hardscapes? Hardscape includes sidewalks, pavers, patios, decks and walls. Structures may include gazebos, trellises, arbors or sheds.”

Outdoor Living With Hardscapes

This is a great garden retreat we made this summer. Complete with paver patio, pergola and framed in nicely with retaining wall and steps.

The fact of the matter is that outdoor living with hardscapes is more than a fad in the Northwest. It is a standard of living. Our landscaping business roughly does about 70 plus percent of all our work in hardscapes. Paver patios, landscape masonry, seat walls, retaining walls and of course ponds and water features. The above photo was a small area, (not all hardscapes are done on a large scale). Here are a couple of blog posts of outdoor living and hardscapes we have written. I hope you find them interesting. Much of the labor of this project is buried under the landscaping you see.

Many landscape contractors say they install great hardscapes, but the fact of the matter is that usually is not what they install a lot of. At Woody’s Custom Landscaping, Inc. we have been installing hardscapes since I started the business in 1990 in Vancouver Washington.
